Instagram, Mindful Growth and Creators Worth Following
As creators, we often find ourselves caught up in the pressures of Instagram—constantly worrying about reach, engagement and that elusive algorithm. It can feel overwhelming when the content we pour our hearts into doesn’t seem to land as far as we’d hoped. But let’s take a step back.
Is Instagram a Means or an End?
At its core, Instagram is only a tool. Chasing numbers cannot be a goal in itself. We need to ask, what do the numbers bring us?
If we’re after growth as a storyteller, professional opportunities, or building meaningful connections, are numbers the right metric?
A lot of creators struggle with reach on Instagram, but rather than letting it define our worth, think about it as one of the many tools in our toolbox.
Here are three ways to shift focus:
Keep showing up: No matter how frustrating the algorithm gets, showing up consistently is important. Even if a post doesn’t reach as far as we'd like, every piece of content we create strengthens our personal brand.
Own your platform: While Instagram is valuable, it’s important to grow spaces where we have full control. Whether it's through a blog, newsletter or podcast, having an owned platform allows us to reach our audience without depending on algorithms.
Diversify your presence: Consider other avenues, like collaborating on creative projects, offering workshops, or writing for publications. Instagram is only one part of our broader journey as a creator.
This perspective can reduce the pressure we feel and help us focus on what truly matters: building something meaningful that aligns with our values.
Case Study: Serena’s Growth Beyond Numbers
Take Serena (@sere_travels) as an example. Despite having fewer than 5,000 followers, she has achieved incredible milestones by focusing on her niche and telling stories with purpose. After completing the Get Paid to Travel the World With Purpose course, Serena refined her approach to content creation, and the results have been profound.
Her first post after the course tripled her usual reach, and since then, she has:
Published two well-received travel guides.
Been featured in Outlook Business for her approach to sustainable travel.
Collaborated with global brands like Planeterra, that share her values.
Been invited by G Adventures for the invite-only World Community Tourism Summit last month!
Serena’s success proves that meaningful storytelling can lead to growth and opportunities, regardless of follower count.
